Philosophy
The faculty and administration of Thomas G. Hayes believe that students learn best when staff and students, parents and community, plan and work together, as models for the progress of all concerned. We believe that students learn best when certain conditions exist in the school climate. Students develop best in an atmosphere in which all participants in the school community feel worthwhile and totally involved.
There should be mutual respect exhibited among staff members, parents and students. Through open lines of communication, staff and students must participate in goal setting and decision-making. Behavioral expectations and disciplinary policies should be clearly stated, fairly administered and firmly enforced. Also, a clean and safe environment must exist.
Appropriate and individualized instructional goals and objectives are also necessary for students to learn effectively. In addition, motivation, challenging activities, varied teaching methods and techniques, and positive reinforcement of students' successes should be present for optimum learning. When students approach the learning situation with good work habits, set educational success as a priority, and maintain regular attendance and punctuality, learning is enhanced.
Within effectively managed classrooms, knowledgeable, proficient teachers should create a program of diversified instruction. As good role models, teachers should be well-prepared instructors, as well as motivated, positive individuals with the students’ education as their professional priority. Parents and the school community must have opportunities to be involved in every aspect of the school program. It is upon these basic premises that our school philosophy is founded.
